Arrghh! What is that thing?! It's your face, that's what it is! Okay, maybe not your face, but this is how all faces go.
On the right is the basic surface of a face. We don't look that scary in real life (or do we?). The lines and shading have been exagerrated to give you a feel of the mass that makes up our head. Using a model like this will help a lot when you are coloring and shading a character's face.
And now, for something a little less frightening...

You see those purple lines? That is how you start off a head. You don't need to use that technique (heck, some just draw eyes and build up from there), but for beginners this is a great way to start drawing heads. The lines crisscrossing the basic shape show the alignment of the facial features. Where the two lines cross is the area between the eyes. |
Below is the head from the side. Notice how some of the back of our skull sticks out a bit.
